Five species to listen for
around Herstmonceux Castle in September

Grey Wagtail

The bouncy flight and call of Grey Wagtail can be heard widely in September, even away from their favoured watery haunts, as migrants pass.

Chiffchaff

Chiffchaffs are the often the first summer birds we’ll hearing singing… and the last! We may catch a little late song, or just their ‘wu-eep’ call.

Firecrest

Scarce but rapidly increasing in Sussex, Firecrests are most easily found in autumn by their subtle ascending call.

Robin

The Robin’s song is among the most likely to be heard in September, as they keep winter territories as well as summer.

Green Woodpecker

The ‘yaffle’ divides its time between hoovering up ants and making its distinctive ‘laugh’ around the parkland.
