Five species at Herstmonceux Castle in June

Cuckoo

The Cuckoo has a simple, easily recognised song, but its singing season is brief, and Cuckoos are not the common birds they once were.

Blackcap

Male Blackcap sitting on a branch

Blackcaps are one of our most accomplished and beautiful singing warblers, and present in wooded corners all around the estate.

Firecrest

Firecrests are scarce but rapidly increasing in Sussex, most easily found in summer by their simple, accelerating song.

Spotted Flycatcher

Spotted Flycatchers are a rapidly declining summer visitor with a very subtle song that’s very helpful in locating them.

Green Woodpecker

The ‘yaffle’ divides its time between hoovering up ants and making its distinctive laughing call around the parkland.
