Five species for Ditchling in June

Song Thrush

The Song Thrush has a very varied song, but the ‘repeat and switch’ pattern, delivered from a high perch, usually gives it away.

For more about the Song Thrush, see the RSPB website.

Blackcap

The Blackcap’s loud, rapid, varied warble can be heard from April onwards through the summer in many wooded spots.

For more about the Blackcap, see the RSPB website.

Lapwing

The Lapwing’s quizzical noises sometimes reveal their presence in arable fields and wet meadows.

For more about the Lapwing see the RSPB website.

Yellowhammer

The Yellowhammer famously sings ‘a little bit of bread and no cheeeese’, all the way through the summer from open land.

For more on the Yellowhammer, see the RSPB website.

Green Woodpecker

Professor Yaffle, with a loud ringing ‘laugh’ and a strong appetite for ants.

For more on the Green Woodpecker, visit the RSPB website.
